(<em>The Fifth Seal, 303-313<\/em>, pg. 34.)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBut the last\u00a0persecution\u00a0was even more severe than any of the previous attempts to extirpate Christianity. In Nicomedia\u00a0\u2018a great multitude\u2019 were\u00a0put to death\u00a0with their\u00a0bishop, Anthimus; of these some perished by the sword, some by fire, while others were drowned. In\u00a0Egypt\u00a0\u2018thousands of men, women and children, despising the present life, . . . endured various deaths\u2019 (Eusebius, <em>Church History VII. 4<\/em> sqq.), and the same happened in many other places throughout the\u00a0East. \u2026 But besides those who actually shed their blood in the first three centuries account must be taken of the numerous\u00a0confessors\u00a0of the Faith\u00a0who, in\u00a0prison, in exile, or in\u00a0penal\u00a0servitude suffered a daily martyrdom more difficult to endure than death itself.
