Symbols are introduced in Revelation 1 and used throughout the book.<\/p>\n

“I have also spoken by the prophets,
\nAnd have multiplied visions;
\nI have given symbols<\/strong><\/em> through the witness of the prophets.\u201d<\/p>\n

The KJV translates symbols<\/strong> as similitudes<\/em>, and the World English Bible, parables<\/em>. The word in Hebrew is Strong’s H1819<\/a>, damah<\/em>, dalet<\/em> + mem<\/em> + hey<\/em>, “to be like, to resemble,” according to Gesenius’ Hebrew Lexicon<\/em>. A similitude<\/strong><\/em>, according to Webster’s, is a counterpart, a double, a visible likeness, an image, or an imaginative comparison, a simile.<\/p>\n

“This verb appears thirty times in Biblical Hebrew and twice in Biblical Aramaic (Dan 3:25, 7:5). … The verb is also an ideal one for the author of the Song of Solomon where the respective lovers search for appropriate figures of speech<\/strong><\/em> to convey their depth of love for each other.”<\/p>\n
